Chapter 22

Kyle was spent after making love to Beth on the couch. He realized he was still lying on top of her, and moved so she was snuggled up against his body. He didn’t want to get up just yet. He was enjoying a little post-coital cuddle time. He turned his head to look at Beth. She had her eyes closed, with a dreamy look on her face.

“Do I even bother asking how that was for you?” he asked anyway.

Beth just smiled, her eyes still closed. “Mmmm.”

Kyle laughed. “Speechless I see. That’s a good sign. I’ll have to remember that if I ever need quiet.”

Beth opened her eyes at the last comment, and gave Kyle a playful, little push.

“It was a long overdue.”

Kyle caressed her arm. “Maybe if you recover enough, we can try it again.”

Beth closed her eyes again. “Mmmm.”

Kyle laughed, and moved to get up. He lifted Beth and carried her up to her room. She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on tight. She rested her head on his chest, and Kyle couldn’t help but feel something stir deep inside his heart. He would do anything for this woman.

Kyle laid Beth down on the bed, and helped her under the covers before he slid in next to her. He pressed up against her back and kissed the back of her neck. She smelled so sweet and he loved how soft her skin was. Beth let out a sigh, and pushed back into him. Kyle wrapped his arm around her, and pulled her close.

“I think I’m falling in love with you,” he confessed. He had thought about it long enough, and it felt good to say it. He waited to see if Beth would respond. Her body didn’t give him any indication as to what she felt.

“Me too,” she whispered.

Kyle decided not to push another round of sex, although his body was ready for it. Her breathing settled into a steady rhythm and he knew she was out. He was happy to fall asleep next to Beth. A few hours later, the pager went off and he ran downstairs to get his clothes back on. He drove to the hall, and hopped into the engine. The call came across as a fire alarm at the care center. Soon they had a truck full, and left the hall.

It proved to be a false alarm, one of the residents had been trying to sneak a smoke in one of the bathrooms. Petey chuckled when they got back in the truck. “You’d think the old guy was back in high school trying to get a cigarette in between classes or something.”

They got back to the hall, and Kyle went to his locker to put his gear away. Petey came over to talk to him.

“Hey, man. Are we still on for the game?”

Kyle nodded. “Yeah. I think Beth’s pretty excited for it too. Speaking of, I’d better get back. I’m not sure she heard me leave.” Kyle realized what he had just said, and looked at Petey, who looked surprised.
